CST Throwback Thursday: WWE Moment of the Week

Share Button

by Steve Farace,

The late 90’s was a great time to be a wrestling fan. You had the attitude era in the WWF and the NWO running wild in WCW. If you have ever watched The Monday Night War, you will know that this weeks throwback moment of the week was arguably the turning point in the ratings war between WWF Raw and WCW Nitro. During that time, Monday Night Raw was taped 3 out of the 4 Mondays in the month. The fact that it was taped most of the time was seen as a negative on WWF, but it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened. The date was 1/4/99 and Mankind was slated to face The Rock for the WWF Title. Tony Schiavone was the lead announcer with WCW at the time and he said something that night that caused hundreds of thousands of viewers to switch channels from WCW to WWF television. Schiavone uttered the now famous words of “ugh that’ll put some butts in the seats” after announcing that Mick Foley was going to win the world title. Those words were spoken under the direction of one Eric Bischoff. Here is the video of that horrible decision:

Now, I wanted to choose a moment that involved Stone Cold and this moment has it all. It has Mankind vs The Rock. It has DX and The Corporation at ringside. It has the glass breaking and a HUGE pop from the crowd! It has Stone Cold sticking it to McMahon and to The Rock. It has it all! Oh and it has Mr. Socko! How can you possibly go wrong. It was after this episode that the WWF began winning the ratings war again. And the rest, as they say is history.
