CST Top 10: Top 10 Movie Villains

Share Button

Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week with The Joker being released, we decided to countdown the Top 10 best movie villains of all time. Almost every film has a villain in cinema history, so this was not easy. Here is what we came up with.

10. Anton Chigurh

Starting off the list is a villain who has stood the test of time since the film’s release in Anton Chigurh. No Country for Old Men is one of the best films the Coen Brothers have ever done and Chigurh is a big reason for it. Javier Bardem was so terrifying as Anton, a man who has no emotion or remorse for human life and went out of his way to accomplish his mission. Deserves to be higher on the list.

9. Voldemort

At number nine we have Voldemort. I still haven’t seen a single Harry Potter film not starring Eddie Redmayne. I’m getting to them, relax Potter people. I just know this guy is without a nose and anyone who is missing a nose has to be somewhat scary. I saw him in The Lego Batman Movie, so there’s that.

8. Loki

Number eight comes in with an MCU villain in the surprising choice Loki. Loki is a terrific villain in the MCU, I guess I just don’t view him as a villain considering where he ended. Looking back at his entire arc, his journey has been incredible, and Tom Hiddleston has been such a great force behind the character allowing him to grow naturally and believably. Though, he isn’t the highest ranked MCU villain on this list.

7. Thanos

Here is the highest-ranked MCU villain who really should be way higher on this list in Thanos. Thanos fully delivered on the promise this franchise gave when they teased him at the end of Avengers and didn’t have a sizeable role until 2018. Six years of teasing paid off in a villain who you felt there was no stopping him. He kicked their ass in Infinity War and in Endgame, nearly killed all our heroes. His determination to get his destiny accomplished is unsettling and his impact on movies is so hard to quantify.

6. T-1000

Just missing out on the top five is the T-1000 from the original Terminator film. Just this unstoppable machine that never seems to get deterred and has one mission in life, to take you down. This is such a scary concept that James Cameron executed masterfully and continued to upgrade in the second film. That face is also uncomfortable to look at and those red eyes will pierce your soul.

5. Hans Landa

Starting off the top five is one of my favorite types of villains, the charismatic one in Hans Landa. Hans Landa completely stole the show in Inglorious Basterds and earned Christoph Waltz an Oscar for the role. This guy can make you feel both comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time while also being five steps ahead. He is always the smartest person in the room and watching this performance over and over again is always enjoyable.

4. The Joker

At number four we have yet another charismatic villain in The Joker from The Dark Knight. This film really should’ve been called The Joker because he completely stole the show from Batman and is all anyone talks about. Heath Ledger gave what is now an all-time performance that won him an Oscar and will be talked about forever. However, the reason we are doing this list is that a movie about this character is being released, and Joaquin Phoenix may have something to say about who is the best Joker.

3. Darth Vader

At number three we have a villain everyone can recognize anywhere anytime in Darth Vader. Even people who have never watched a Star Wars film know who Darth Vader is. Watch, “Steve, do you know who Darth Vader is?” “Yeah”. There you go. That black mask and heavy breathing is so haunting and what he is capable of is so thrilling to watch that you can’t help but love him.

2. Hans Gruber

In at number two is a villain that I find to be a bit of a reach so high in Hans Gruber. What does this guy even do in Die Hard? He takes over a building and then loses it because his entire crew can’t handle one Bruce Willis. I mean that’s a tall task, but he failed hard at it. He has a fun voice so that is nice to hear when he speaks and his actions are clever. In the end, it is all for nothing because he dies, and the franchise continues to go on too long and now people dislike Jai Courtney. Thanks, Hans Gruber.

1. Hannibal Lector

Finally, in at number one is Enchantress from Suicide Squad! That dancing witch is truly something. Oh wait, number one is Hannibal Lector. Of course, it is Hannibal Lector, there weren’t very many other options. Hannibal did something that most of these villains couldn’t, he got what he wanted without having to move a muscle or be in the movie for that long. The power of manipulation is a dangerous thing and Hannibal uses that to full capacity in Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins gives a performance like he never has or ever will again and will forever haunt cinema history.

Well, there you have it! The Top 10 best movie villains of all time. There are so many great villains throughout cinema history that could’ve been chosen. I personally loved Terrance Fletcher from Whiplash and that crazy vein popping out of his head. What does your list look like? Let us know below and we will see you next time with another list.
