Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week with Peppermint coming out, we decided to do Top 10 Revenge Movies. These are movies where our character, or characters, have a chance to get back at their unfortunate, sometime horrific, circumstances. Considering this list has a lot of serious kick ‘em when they are down moment, it was also a lot of fun to put together.
Starting off the list is a movie we just talked about last week, Oldboy. The story is about a man who was kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years. After he is released, he has five days to track down his captor. This is an intense action mystery that keeps you engaged constantly. So how exactly is this a revenge movie? Well after the shocking ending, you’ll definitely find yourself seeing a much more intimate revenge. See this film.
In at number nine is one of our only traditional westerns to make the list with Unforgiven. Considered a Clint Eastwood masterpiece, he takes everything he had learned about the genre and applies to create one of, if not his greatest, film. The western genre is not what it once was anymore, however this was one of the greats. If you are looking for a classic western, this is a great option.
8. The Crow
The Crow is a film people have been trying to remake for years but yet can’t seem to truly capture the dark yet emotional journey. Brandon Lee stepped into this role and embraced it so much so that it took his life. The Crow explores what happens when the thing you love the most gets taken away in the most drastic fashion but your dark side decides to take over. Regardless, this is a fantastic film that came out before comic book movies were what they are today.
7. Django Unchained
Number seven on our list is the first of a director you might see quite a bit of here in due to him being able to truly bring emotional violence in such amazing fashion, Django Unchained. Unlikely pair, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz have terrific chemistry throughout their journey to save Django’s true love, all while being bad asses and taking names on behalf of slaves. He wants revenge and he certainly gets it. It’s a bloody film, but one worth watching.
Just missing out on the top five is the classic film Gladiator. One of Ridley Scott’s best is about a man who seeks revenge against the government that killed his family and forced him into slavery. This is set during Roman times and you really get the feel for that era. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix are great as they always are and lead this terrific film.
5. Kill Bill vol. 1
Starting off the top five is our second Quentin Tarantino film in Kill Bill vol. 1. The Kill Bill films really brought Uma Thurman into the spotlight as a powerhouse actress. Here she plays a character called The Bride who just wants to get revenge on the assassins who betrayed her. She wakes up from a coma and from that moment is a nonstop thrill ride into her tracking each player down. This film was so good that you excitedly wait for the blaring theme music that indicates her rage.
Coming in at number four we have one of the most classic films ever in Braveheart. This is Mel Gibson’s, before his slip into DUI land, masterpiece where we see him lead a revolt against the king of England. This film is long, epic, and unlike other revenge films, showed a deeper kind of revenge in revolution. This also showed just how powerful Gibson was as a director. It is also a brutally violent film but one that earns it. See this film.
3. The Godfather
In at number three is a film considered to be one of the greatest of all time in The Godfather. What is there left to say about this movie that hasn’t already been said? The only reason why this isn’t number one is because there are a few films that embody revenge better. The Godfather is a tour de force in acting, directing, and many other fields. Not to mention the film that shows up on the top 10 the most.
2. Inglorious Basterds
Our final Quentin Tarantino film to make the count is Inglorious Basterds. Some may consider this to be his best, but everyone has a different opinion on Tarantino. Inglorious Basterds is a very interesting film to say the least in how we are thrown into an alternate reality of World War II and see it through not so forgiving eyes. Christoph Waltz is mesmerizing once again but this time as the villain and the Bastards themselves change the level of hate anyone can have for Nazis.
1. John Wick
Our number one revenge movie of all time is without a doubt John Wick. John Wick to me is the definition of a revenge film. He is a former assassin who is retired to start a family. He loses his wife who leaves behind a puppy for him. When a couple of punks kill that puppy, John Wick goes out for revenge. You do not mess with this guy. Keanu Reeves revitalized his career with this character and showed just how badass he could be again. The sequel was just as good and now we cannot wait for chapter 3.
Well there you have it. The Top 10 Revenge Movies of all time. This was such a vast and fun list to make and it turned out to have great films involved. What does your list look like? Let us know in the comments and we will see you next week with another list.
