Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week with Crazy Rich Asians being released, we decided to countdown the Top 10 best Romantic Comedies of all time. This is a broad topic, and everyone had vastly different opinions. It was tough to cut it to 10 but here’s what we came up with.
10. There’s Something About Mary
Starting off this list is There’s Something About Mary. This is a film many men can get into because most of us had that girl we really liked in high school and would’ve loved a shot with her. Here we see that fantasy play out and this leads to some terrific laughs. It just barely made the list but number ten is a great spot for this one. Cameron Diaz hasn’t been better and it’s a shame she never really broke out of this.
9. The Big Sick
At number nine we have the most recent addition to this list in The Big Sick. The Big Sick came out just last year in 2017 and took the country by storm. It was the true story of how Kumail Nanjiani met his wife and it was such a heartwarming tale. His former girlfriend was diagnosed with a rare and deadly disease and he did everything he could to be there for her. This story was sad but also hilarious with terrific performances all around. Check this one out.
8. Silver Linings Playbook
In at number eight we have one that may be controversial in Silver Linings Playbook. Some people view this as a drama, but it does have elements of comedy and romance, so it qualifies for the list. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are fantastic here and carry this film. It is such an engaging story about mental illness and family and it is no wonder it was nominated for multiple academy awards.
7. Groundhog Day
Number seven on our list is an iconic romantic comedy in Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day is a film we all know about, even those who have yet to see it. Bill Murray relives the same day over and over again and that day happens to be the one where a groundhog looks at his shadow. We have seen this concept done to death now but Groundhog Day was the first to become famous for it. This is peak Bill Murray and is one of his best movies ever and probably the most iconic film on this list.
6. 500 Days of Summer
Just missing out on the top five is 500 Days of Summer. This is such a unique and devastating movie as we follow Joseph Gordon-Levitt and see him suffering from a breakup. From there we go back and forth through time and try to figure out where it all went wrong. You are rooting for Levitt the entire time until the end when Zooey Deschanel just absolutely kicks you in the balls and you find out why she left him. It will shake you up and wraps up this fantastic film.
5. 10 Things I Hate About You
Starting off the top five is a film many people love in 10 Things I Hate About You. This film is based off the Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew” and adapts it to a more modern-day setting. Here we see relationship drama unfold with many laughs along the way. Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are great, and the film is a classic romantic comedy.
4. Friends with Benefits
Coming in at number four is one of my favorite films in the last ten years in Friends with Benefits. This film is just pure magic to me and you feel that same magic every time you watch it. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are perfect together in this film and the story is so much fun. Put a film in New York City that embraces the city and you have me hooked. I mean we get to see a flash mob dance to “Closing Time” in Grand Central Station, it doesn’t get much better than that.
3. Pretty Woman
Number three on our list is another classic romantic comedy in Pretty Woman. This is the film that made people fall in love with Julia Roberts and make her America’s sweetheart. She plays an escort who meets Richard Gere and they must learn to get along, and of course, fall in love. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts have terrific chemistry and made this one of the most memorable romantic comedies of all time.
2. Wedding Crashers
Just missing out on the number one spot is the Wedding Crashers. We have all seen this movie because it is on television almost every day. Wedding Crashers is a film about well, wedding crashers who crash a wedding and everything turns upside down. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are one of the most famous comedy duos of all time and they established that in Wedding Crashers. We also have Rachel McAdams, Isla Fischer, Bradley Cooper, Will Ferrell, and Christopher Walken starring to round out such a terrific cast. It was almost number one if not for…
1. When Harry Met Sally…
Our number one romantic comedy of all time is When Harry Met Sally… When Harry Met Sally… handily earned the top spot on this list and it appeared on almost everyone’s list. This is an all-time great film that is led by Billy Crystal and the always reliable Meg Ryan. It is the story about two friends who clearly like each other but fear sex would ruin their friendship. It was nominated for best screenplay at the Oscars that year and has lived on for generations. If you have not seen this film, what are you waiting for?
Well there it is! The Top 10 best romantic comedies of all time. This was an incredibly difficult list to come up with as there were so many great options. Maybe Crazy Rich Asians will make this list some day? What does your list look like? Jump into the comments and let us know. We will see you next week with another edition of the Top 10.
