Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week with 12 Strong coming out, we decided to do Top 10 War movies. There are many films to choose from spanning from generation to generation. Some are better than others, but there are many solid options to choose from. Without further ado, here we go!

10. Platoon

Starting off our list is 1986’s Platoon. This war film takes place during the Vietnam war and is the story about a young soldier who faces a moral crisis when seeing the horrors of war. The performances here are all terrific and is one of director Oliver Stone’s greatest films. This film won best picture the year it was released and rightfully so.

9. Jarhead

Coming in at number nine is Jarhead. Released in 2009, Jarhead is the story of the Gulf War through the eyes of an American sniper. When a situation at home clouds his memory, he must learn to cope in the midst of a war. Jake Gyllenhaal does another great job here and shows what is to come of his young career. While not loved by all, there are many who think Jarhead is worthy of being on the list.

8. Hacksaw Ridge

At number eight is our most recent film, Hacksaw Ridge. This film was released in 2016 and met with critical praise as it was recognized at the Academy Awards. Mel Gibson returned to prominence here as the director and got an Oscar nominated performance here out of Andrew Garfield who played a conscientious objector just wanting to serve his country. This is a fantastic and gruesome film.

7. The Hurt Locker

Next up on the list is another critically acclaimed movie in The Hurt Locker. One of the greatest female directors ever in Kathryn Bigelow directs an Oscar winning movie. This film takes place during the Iraq War and shows the pressures of having to be on a bomb squad. This is a tense and dramatic film and well-deserving of being best picture of 2008.

6. Full Metal Jacket

Just missing the top five is Full Metal Jacket. One of the greatest directors ever, Stanley Kubrick, continues to show his range by giving us a gritty war movie. This is a brutal and tough watch, but a very good war film. You get to see what effect war really takes on soldiers in this film. When people think of Stanley Kubrick, this is one of the many great films that comes to mind.

5. Braveheart

Starting off the top five, we have a classic in Braveheart. Many people regard this film as their favorite of all time, and rightfully so, this is a fantastic movie. Mel Gibson really established himself here as a force in Hollywood, and gives his best performance ever. This film is endlessly rewatchable and gets you excited every time.

4. Zero Dark Thirty

At number four, we have another more recent film in Zero Dark Thirty. Once again, we have another Kathryn Bigelow directed film, and probably her best. This tells the story of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden and what one woman did to make sure he was found. It is an intense and gripping film that was snubbed of the Oscar that year.

3. Apocalypse Now

Just getting into the top three is another classic film in Apocalypse Now. Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola delivers another all timer here, especially for the war genre. This all-star cast helps deliver a fascinating war film with classic actors such as Robert Duvall and Marlon Brando. This film will forever live on in history.

2. Inglorious Basterds

Coming in at number two is one of Tarantino’s best, Inglorious Basterds. This is a fictional horror film, but one that is very entertaining. Christoph Waltz is terrifying here as Hans Landa and even won an Academy Award for it. It is a film about trying to take down Adolf Hitler, how could you not enjoy this. With Tarantino’s dialogue, and all the great performances, how can you not give this film a shot?

1. Saving Private Ryan

Finally, at the top spot we have Saving Private Ryan. Many people regard this as the best war film ever and here at CST, we agree. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan is the story about a group of soldiers who go behind enemy lines to save a paratrooper. This film will forever live in infamy as the one that was robbed of best picture by Shakespeare in Love. Regardless, this is an amazing film that will forever be remembered in history.
