Dan’s Top Five MLB Power Rankings

by Dan Skip Allen

1.Boston Red Sox: (58-29) 7-3 in the last 10 games. They are in a first place tie in the AL East with the New York Yankees. They took 2 out 3 vs the signing Mariners and they swept the Angels this week to complete a season series sweep versus them. They lost last night 8 to 1 vs the Yankees taking them from a 1 game lead in the AL East to a tie. They made a few pickups this week as well. Getting Steve Pearce from the Blue Jays and signing veteran 2 baseman Brandon Phillips to a minor league contract. With Chris Sale going on Saturday and vs Sonny Gray and David Price vs Luis Severino on Sunday this series could be key to who stays in front in the AL East. The Red Sox have a series vs The Nationals during the 4th of July week. They need to keep their momentum from the previous week.

2.New York Yankees: (55-28) 5-5 in the last 10 games. Basically tied with The Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. They got swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and took 2 out 3 vs the Phillies. Before heading into a 3 games series vs the rival Boston Red Sox. An 8 to 1 win on Friday gets them off to a good start. CC Sabathia pitched marvelous to help them to the win. The Yankees bats woke up as well. Brian Cashman is stating the Yankees are definite buyers during the trade deadline. They definitely are buyers. With the Mets possibly looking to trade either Jacob Degrom or Noah Syndergaard the Yankees could be in the market for a starting pitcher of that caliber. With the Mets trade with their cross town rivals though? That’s the question. Another tough series vs the Braves over the 4th of July holiday could be telling going into the all star break next week.

3.Houston Astros: (56-31) 6-4 in the last 10 Games. 1st Place in the AL West. The Houston Astros  have been on a roll lately. The Astros had a 11 game road winning streak before they hit a roadblock in Tampa this weekend. Losing 3 to 2 on Friday. Carlos Correa goes on the dl (Disabled List) with a sore back. They brought up a pitcher from the minors Cionel Perez. Alex Bregman has been hitting walk offs. If he keeps hitting this way the Astros are in good shape. An upcoming series with the Rangers, there in state rival will show if they are ready to make another run. Coming into the all star break could be just a minor bump in what has been great season so far. You never want to interrupt momentum once you have it going.

4.Seattle Mariners: (55-31) 6-4 in the last 10 games. 2nd place in the AL West 2.5 games back of the Houston Astros. Losing 2 out of 3 to the Boston Red Sox and taking 2 out of 3 from the Baltimore Orioles has them on an up swing playing The Kansas City Royals this weekend. Winners 4 to 1 on Friday has them off to a good start. Playing the Angels next week is good for them to keep on a role. You never know they could catch the Astros for first in the AL West by the All Star Break.

5. Atlanta Braves: (49-35) 5-5 in the last 10 games. 1st Place in the NL East. Losing 2 out 3 to both the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds has the Braves reeling coming into a series with the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend. Taking game 1 on Friday will hopefully lead to them getting back on track. Next week they play the New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Brewers during the 4th of July holiday. This could make or break them leading into the All Star Break. The Phillies and Nationals are close on their heels only 3 games back.
