Farace Previews Mets vs Twins

The Mets begin their 4th series of the year as they attempt to improve on their 6-3 start to the season. This time it is the start of the inter-league schedule as the Twins come to town for a quick 2 game set. The Twins are off to a 5-3 start after losing 2 of 3 in Philadelphia over the weekend. Let’s take a look at the pitching match-ups:

Game 1

Jacob deGrom vs Kyle Gibson

deGrom is attempting to make history tonight as he can pass Bob Gibson for the most quality starts in a row ever in MLB. deGrom gets the start in place of Jason Vargas so that deGrom can pitch on normal rest. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner also has a career-best 26-inning scoreless streak coming into the game. Depending on the Twins lineup, they have a combined 8 at-bats against deGrom with 2 hits and an RBI. deGrom has a perfect ERA with 24 strikeouts in his first two starts of the season, winning both (Nationals and Marlins).

Gibson is attempting to bounce back after a rough outing against the Royals in his first start of the season. He was cruising along until a 5 run 5th inning and his very early-season ERA sits at 9.64. The Met to face him the most in the line-up is Robinson Cano who is hitting .280 against Gibson with 3 RBI in 25 career at-bats.

Game 2

Noah Syndergaard vs Jake Odorizzi

Thor is looking to continue to build off his last start against the Nationals in which he gave up 2 runs on 1 hit in 6 innings and was the hard-luck loser in the Mets home opener. He looks to get into the win column for the first time in 2019 against a team he has never faced before.

Odorizzi is looking to bounce back after a rough start in Philadelphia on Friday as he was unable to get out of the first inning while giving up 5 to the Phillies. In his only career start against the Mets, Odorizzi allowed 1 run in 6 2/3 innings. Once again, the Met to face Odorizzi the most is Robinson Cano, who has a .286 average in 14 career at-bats with an RBI.

Bottom Line

The Twins will be coming into Citifield without the services of their big bopper Nelson Cruz as there will be no DH. Cruz only played the field in 4 games last year and missed the entire 3 game set in Philly. That puts the lineup at an immediate disadvantage, but the team is hitting a respectable .256 through the first 8 games. The star in the line-up has been Jorge Polanco (SS) who is scorching hot, batting .375 with 3 doubles, 2 triples, and a homerun – hitting for the cycle against the Phillies on Friday night.

The Mets come in hitting .270 as a team with Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto leading the charge. We might see some shuffling in the Mets line-up with Brandon Nimmo struggling mightily at the plate. There are a number of options with the amount of depth the Mets have and several players will be playing for roster spots with Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie getting closer to returning.
