Hump Day Thoughts on Sports – 3/13/13

Welcome to Hump Day people. There is a TON of stuff going on in the world of sports so let’s not delay this bad boy this week with my normal witty banter. You guys think I’m witty, don’t you? Whatever.

The Miami Heat have now won 20 straight games. That is incredibly amazingly unbelievable. Yeah I just said that. It just shows that the Heat are light-years ahead of the rest of the teams. It is hard to go on a winning streak in professional sports between playing against the talent that is out there and the travel that takes place. The Heat have now gone 43 days without losing a basketball game and they have now gone just about a quarter of the season without a loss. Crazy.

NFL Free Agency is here and we spoke about it a lot on the podcast yesterday. The big news of the day is Wes Welker going cross-country to Denver and bolting from the New England Patriots. Didn’t Tom Brady take a pay cut so the Pats could sign Welker? The offer from New England was 2 years, $10 million. I don’t see how they wanted to keep him if they let $2 million beat them. He goes to a team in conference as well as your rival and for Tom Brady, your rival QB. I know it’s the Patriots and they will find a way, but that’s a tough pill to swallow if you’re a Pats fan. Danny Amendola was their backup plan and he has agreed to a 5 year, $31 million contract. Younger option, but let’s see how much the Pats miss Welker.

Team USA is sizzling after their victory over Puerto Rico last night. They were backed by Gio Gonzalez and David “Captain America” Wright. Wright has been SIZZLING hot and he will need to stay that way if they will be able to beat the Dominican Republic tomorrow night.

Kobe Bryant is out indefinitely after spraining his ankle. This is Kobe Bryant we are talking about here. I think we should all calm down and believe it when we see it. The Black Mamba is such a gamer that it is hard to imagine him being out for an extended amount of time, especially when the Lakers are just about hanging in there in the 8th seed in the West. On a side note I love how all of the Laker fans have come out of the woodwork. They are in the 8th seed people…the 8th seed.

Reggie Bush has signed a 4 year deal with the Detroit Lions. Matt Stafford needed that – Mr. Rubber Arm need someone that will allow him to throw a bit less next season.

What’s happening in Hockey? Who cares.

The Knicks are being run out of the Pepsi Center in Denver 43-30 right now. Ugly.

Congrats goes out to the Miami Hurricanes as they are the ACC Champs! Their coach Jim Larranaga was also the ACC Coach of the Year. Wow – who saw all of that coming?

Dwight Howard handled his return to Orlando in the childish way that you would think he would have. He laughed at the fans and he chuckled at all of the boos. He should have just kept a straight face and went out and dominated (and boy did he dominate).

Knicks now down 49-30 and taking jumper after jumper and Melo is 3-10. Ugly.

Shonn Greene of the “white hot garbage” variety is now a member of the Tennessee Titans.

What the hell are the Giants doing? They signed Aaron Ross – now what? Get it together!

That’ll do it for this week! If you think I missed out on something big this week let me know!

I’m out!
