FILM REVIEW: ATOMIC BLONDE

BY KYLE ARANGO

“Atomic Blonde” is directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Sofia Boutella, and Toby Jones. “Atomic Blonde” is based on the comic book series “The Coldest City” which is about a spy/assassin named Lorraine Broughtan and her journeys in her field of work. This film is loosely the same thing about Lorraine on a mission in Berlin during the Cold War. This movie promised awesome action and a fun time, but did it deliver? Kind of. Atomic Blonde is an average film with great action, but suffers from a familiar plot and poor decisions.

Starting with the positives, ”Atomic Blonde’s” action scenes are great. The action is well choreographed with expert acting by all those involved. What makes the action so great is the how real it feels. When you fight, you start to get tired after a couple hits and they perfectly show that in this movie. In particular, one action scene is the best scene of the whole movie when they end up in a stairwell and go on a 10-minute fight. You’ll know this scene once you get to it.

Finally, the thing that bothered me the most was not the soundtrack, but how it was used. Being that this takes place during the tearing down of the Cold War, you can expect to have some 80’s music in there, which you do over, and over, and over again. The problem is not the music itself but just how it felt so forced. It felt like “here’s an 80’s song! You like that?, Here’s another!” over and over again to the point where it felt like the first half hour of dare I say, “Suicide Squad”. In a movie like “Baby Driver” or “Guardians of the Galaxy”, the music was almost a character in of itself because it was utilized properly. In “Atomic Blonde”, the music just feels forced.

In the end, “Atomic Blonde” is a fun movie at parts with not much more left to offer. It has great action and acting, but a familiar story and terrible pacing. If you want to see great action and fight scenes then definitely check this out, but if you are looking for more, this might not be the movie for you. This film is no “John Wick”, but it certainly can be enjoyable.
