Last week the internet was sent into a frenzy when Lucasfilm announced that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow would no longer be directing Star Wars Episode 9 due to “creative differences”. The internet immediately went into speculation as to who would be the replacement for Trevorrow. People like Ava DuVernay, Jon Favreau, and the Russo brothers were all thrown out but the consensus came to 1 director, Rian Johnson. Rian Johnson appeared to be the logical choice considering there have been no problems in the filming of The Last Jedi which is set to release in December. However, Johnson recently said on a Japanese talk show that he declined the job of episode 9, to the disappointment of many. Today the world finally got the answer for who would direct episode 9, and the choice was Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams.
The moment Abrams was announced to be returning to the Star Wars franchise, the internet blew up with people all having their different opinions on the director and his films. Some believe he was the worst choice possible while others love this choice, I happen to side with the ladder. I believe JJ Abrams is the right choice to replace Trevorrow and the safe choice. First and foremost, Abrams is a Star Wars fan which is maybe the most important quality in choosing a director for a Star Wars film. You do not want someone who knows nothing about this large universe to step in and pretend they do. He knows the characters, the books, and the lure which is one of the reasons he was selected for The Force Awakens.
Another reason why JJ Abrams is the right choice is because of what he did with The Force Awakens. We would not be talking about Star Wars films at all if it was not for Abrams. He had the toughest job in the world with that film which was pleasing Star Wars fans. He had to both satisfy fans of the original trilogy and bring in new fans of a new generation. Remember, before The Force Awakens, the last Star Wars films we had seen were the prequels which left a sour taste in many fans mouths for the lack of quality those produced. The last thing we saw was Darth Vader screaming “NOOOOOOOOOOOO”, which we can never un see. The fact that he brought fans together is a tremendous accomplishment.
Now let’s talk about what JJ Abrams did with The Force Awakens. Many people love this film while many also criticize it. The biggest criticism was its similarities to A New Hope which, I can completely recognize. However, there is more to the film then that. Abrams introduced us to a strong female lead in Rey, a male lead of color in Fin, and a Hispanic lead in Poe. He also gave us an intriguing and interesting villain in Kylo Ren. At the same time, he also brought us back old favorites in Han Solo, Leia, Chewy, and many more. He took a huge risk in putting the galaxy’s greatest hero at the end of the film and not having utter a single word. He opened us up too many new questions about this universe and these characters. By getting the job to direct episode 9, he can now wrap up the trilogy by answering these questions.
The final reason why JJ Abrams was the right choice is because he is the safe choice. Safe is not a bad thing either. It is no secret Lucasfilm has had many problems with directors so far in the Kathleen Kennedy era. Gareth Edwards had to have help come in for reshoots on Rogue One. Josh Trank was let go from the franchise after his debacle while filming Fantastic 4. Phil Lord and Chris Miller were recently fired from directing the untitled Han Solo movie and replaced by Ron Howard. Now Trevorrow is let go of episode 9 and replaced by Abrams. So many shake ups at Lucasfilm, but bringing in JJ Abrams is safe because he knows how to play ball with the executives after already making a film for them. If Lucasfilm brought in another young or bold director to replace Trevorrow, how bad would it look if that person did not work out? Another director fired by Lucasfilm. That’s not the kind of press Lucasfilm needs any more of. By bringing back JJ Abrams, we have someone who knows what he’s doing and already has a good relationship with the executives of Lucasfilm.
In the end, this can all seem like a big old mess, and that the sky is falling for Star Wars. However, if you take a step back, you’ll realize everything is not bad at all. With as many reshoots Rogue One had, it still made over a billion dollars. Ron Howard could be making an amazing Han Solo movie, and getting rid of Trevorrow now before production starts is the right move. Now Lucasfilm brings back JJ Abrams to finish the trilogy, and make a great Star Wars movie. Remember, The Force Awakens is the highest grossing domestic movie of all time and the 3rd highest grossing film worldwide all time, Abrams made one of the most successful movies of all time. If it was a failure, there would be no more Star Wars right now. Lucasfilm has now pushed the date of episode 9 back from May to December of 2019 to give JJ Abrams more time to make the film. Will JJ Abrams make an amazing close to the trilogy? Only time will tell, but I believe he will. So, stop acting like JJ punched your mother internet! Give him a chance and let’s see where this adventure takes us.
