Kyle’s Hot Take: Margot Robbie

I’ve got thoughts, and I have a ton of them. Some fall in line with the majority opinion, and others are completely my own. That’s where this comes in. Time for a segment I like to call Kyle’s Hot Take of the Week. This week I talk about an actress that is becoming massively popular and it might not be what you think.

Hot Take – Margot Robbie is the most fascinating actress working today.

Recently it was reported that Margot Robbie would be producing and potentially starring in a reboot of Tank Girl. Remember Tank Girl? That terrible 1995 movie with Naomi Watts? Yeah neither do many people because it is a ridiculous concept that is executed poorly. So why would I be confident Margot Robbie doing it would be good? Because she is the most intelligent thinking actress working today. She has not committed to starring in it yet because she is waiting to read the script, but the pitch must’ve been so good that she is willing to give it a shot and the studio will wait for her.

Margot Robbie has been acting since 2008, but she really burst onto the scene in 2013 with The Wolf of Wall Street. A brilliant film with an amazing performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, but people left saying “that woman who played his second wife was really good, who is she?”. She stole every scene she was in and went back and forth with DiCaprio like a seasoned actress. Her popularity shot up from there and she did something unique with it.

Let’s get the elephant out of the room first. Margot is obviously one of the most beautiful women on the planet and her sex scene in Wolf of Wall Street is terrific. While she could’ve coasted off that and just been the beautiful woman in all her films, that’s not what she chose to do with her career. She instead decided to take interesting and unique characters and flex her acting muscles with big-name directors. She went on to do Focus next with Will Smith and while not a great film, her chemistry with Will is insane and she exceeds him in many scenes. Suicide Squad is obviously not a good film, but what do you remember as being the best part of that film? Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. agreed and she has a spin-off in Birds of Prey coming next year.

To this point, she has only played unique and interesting characters, but her big moment where she announced to the world how great of an actress she is was in 2017. I, Tonya was a project Margot chased for a while and was pushing to get made where she would play the polarizing Tonya Harding. She got the film made and earned her first Oscar nomination as a result for lead actress. She is heartbreaking in this role and should’ve won the award if you are asking me.

While some of the films she is in aren’t very good, she gives an amazing performance every single time, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Even a boring film like Mary Queen of Scotts still allowed Robbie to do something different. Then this year she got a call from Quentin Tarantino and made Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood with him where she played Sharon Tate. While not a huge role, she made the most of every second of it so much so that audiences wanted more of her. She brought tears to my eyes playing this angelic figure and reminding us of what could’ve been for this tragic person. This is all thanks to what Margot Robbie brought to the role.

So while you may be wondering why Margot is the more fascinating over others such as Amy Adams or Viola Davis, the reason is that she has made unique choices over and over again. Have they all worked? No, but it never seems to be her fault and when she hits, she hits big. In her young career, she has gone toe to toe with Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith while also working with Cinema legends in Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. Just think how interested you are in a film now when Margot Robbie gets announced with something. Later this year she is starring in Bombshell alongside Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron about the Fox News story. Everything she has coming up is fascinating where she will be exploring big and small films as well as multiple genres. In her short career thus far, she has grabbed Hollywood by its male-dominated balls and made them all pay attention to her, and we are all anticipating what she does next.
