THE BEST MOVIES OF 2017

BY KYLE ARANGO

Wow, what a year 2017 has been. Much better than 2016 in my opinion. This year has been mostly predictable for movies. The movies we expected to be bad, were absolute trash, and the ones we thought would be good turned out to meet expectations or exceed them. I already know my list is going to be different than most so here we go!

HONORABLE MENTION

Wonder Woman

Coco

Thor: Ragnarok

Logan

Wind River

THE TOP TEN

10. ONLY THE BRAVE

To start off my list I have a movie that was extremely overlooked this year. Only the Brave is the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who were firefighters who saved many. This was the only movie to make me cry this year that I did not have a previous attachment to. It is tragic, emotional, and a must watch for everyone.

9. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

Coming up next, we have War for the Planet of the Apes. Each movie in this trilogy has made my top 10 lists of that year and this was no different. What impressed me most is how they were able to tell a story with an ape at the center who can barely speak English. Andy Serkis puts on the performance of his life here and the visual effects are top notch. This will go down as one of the best trilogies of all time.

8. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

At number eight we have a strong awards contender in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This is the story about a mother who lost her daughter, and the police still haven’t solved the crime. To protest, she purchases three billboards to antagonize the police. This is an acting clinic here where Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Francis McDormand just give it their all and it is a fascinating story to watch.

7. THE SHAPE OF WATER

Next up on the list is Guillermo del Toro’s latest, The Shape of Water. This is the story about a mute woman who falls in love with a tortured creature. It is a dramatic love story with a strange take. It takes elements of old-school cinema and puts a modern twist on it. Sally Hawkins does such a magnificent job here and helps to make this Guillermo’s best film since Pan’s Labyrinth. This is a fantastic film and deserves to be seen.

6. THE DISASTER ARTIST

Coming in at number six is The Disaster Artist. This is the film about the making of the worst movie ever, The Room. James Franco absolutely commits here as Tommy Wiseau and turns out one of the best performances of the year. This is one of the funniest and most heart-felt movies of the year as you get to see that these guys actually thought they were making the greatest film ever. It is a fun experience and makes you hopeful that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

5. BABY DRIVER

Starting off the top five we have Baby Driver. This is director Edgar Wright’s latest film and boy what a good one it is. The entire ensemble cast is fantastic here with Ansel Elgort leading the way. The way Edgar Wright incorporates music into the story and makes it flow is fantastic. The action is top notch as well with great car chases. This is one of the most fun movies of the year.

4. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

At number four, we have a film that may be controversial, but I don’t care. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is the sequel to my favorite film of all time, and what a sequel it is. This film took the first one, and expanded it while also making it feel contained and real. I know some people don’t like this film, but for me it really just hit home and made me smile, cheer, and cry. People like to say Marvel films cut it dramatic beats with jokes and I say go and watch Guardians 2 again. There are some deep, emotional tones and beats here that make this film special to me and that is why it is so high on my list. I will forever be a defender of this film.

3. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

At number three, I have another Marvel film in Spiderman Homecoming. This was the most fun I had all year in a theater and it came in at a really hard time in my life. This will forever be a film that I remember because it is one of the reasons I now write for this website. In addition, Tom Holland is spectacular as Peter Parker and Michael Keaton is one of the best villains Marvel has ever seen. This is the most rewatchable movie and is part of the reason why it is number 3 for me.

2. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Listen, I know this is one of the most split movies ever. People either love it or hate it. For me, it is a spectacular film. This is not just a Star Wars film, it is a Rian Johnson movie. What Johnson does here by taking Star Wars and flipping it on its head is so fascinating and I take in something new every time I watch it. Everything I expected to happen here didn’t and, I could not be more satisfied. Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill are fantastic here as well as Adam Driver who, at the end of this trilogy, might be a better villain than Darth Vader. Yeah, I said it. I love what this franchise is doing, and can not wait for the next.

1. BLADE RUNNER 2049

The best film of 2017 to me is Blade Runner 2049. Nobody saw this film and that is absolutely crazy because it is a modern masterpiece. Director Denis Villeneuve delivers another gem here as he always does. No movie has made me think as much as this did. They took the original which is considered a classic, and improved upon it by expanding the world and telling a compelling story. I am so ashamed that people passed on this film because they are really missing out. It is the best film of the year.

So, there you go! That was my top 10 best films of the year. What do you think? Agree or disagree? Either way, I am excited for the debate and look forward to seeing other lists. Hopefully 2018 can be as good or better than 2017.
