Recently, I was lucky enough to catch up with sportsman extraordinaire, Len Berman. Len was nice enough to answer a few questions from me about the state of New York sports!
Steve: Like many people, I grew up watching your sports segment on NBC in NY and have always loved your Spanning the World segment. Is there any particular blooper that stands out to you? One that would be #1 on your Spanning the World countdown?
Len: The harness racing horse in Sullivan Co. who turned 13, so they had the horse bar mitzvahed. Wasn’t much of a bar mitzvah, but as a rabbi told me “It must have been one helluva bris.”
Steve: The Mets are near and dear to my heart – what are your thoughts on the current state of the team? What do you believe should happen as far as the Wilpons ownership of the team?
Len: It’ll work itself out. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait until the Madoff mess gets settled. Fred is basically a good man. I hope it works out for him.
Steve: When do you think the Mets will contend again?
Len: The good thing about baseball is ya never know. What if Ike Davis and Daniel Murphy tear up the league? What if R.A. Dickey and Santana are unhittable? Nobody picked the Cards last year. Keep the faith.
Steve: The Yankees were very quiet up until the Pineda trade and Cashman always seems to come through when Yankee fans are getting restless – do you think they are the new favorites of the AL considering what the Angels and Tigers have done?
Len: I always consider the Yankees the favorites. They’ve got the resources to do whatever they want up until the trade deadline and beyond.
Steve: The Knicks have been one of the (if not THE) biggest disappointments so far this season. Hindsight being 20/20, would the Knicks be better off without Carmelo Anthony or is this still a team that can contend once they get a point guard that can run the offense?
Len: Yeah, the Knicks are missing pieces. I wouldn’t toss out Melo just yet.
Steve: If the Knicks don’t turn it around by __________, Mike D’Antoni will be added to the 8.3% unemployment rate.
Len: With James Dolan you just never know. People thought he was insane for Keeping Glen Sather around, and now the Rangers may be the best team in the league.
Steve: Plaxico Burress is the latest Jet (although he chose not to make a comment) to show a lack of support for Mark Sanchez. Can this situation be saved or will the Jets go after Peyton Manning aggressively this off-season?
Len: Not sure Peyton Manning is the answer. The problem now is you have to sink or swim with Sanchez. And I don’t think the organization is ready to pull the plug on him.
Steve: What is the Giants biggest key to winning the Super Bowl this Sunday?
Len: Pass rush.
Steve: Who is the wild card for the Giants?
Len: Victor Cruz
Steve: What is the Patriots biggest key to winning the Super Bowl this Sunday?
Len: Keeping Brady upright.
Steve: Who is the wild card for the Patriots?
Len: Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis
Steve: Big prediction! Will there be a parade for the NY football Giants on Tuesday??
Len: My answer: Not in New Jersey!
Steve: Final Score?
Len: Giants 27 Patriots 17
Steve: What is Len Bermans favorite spot in NYC?
Len: Doesn’t exist anymore. The old, older, Yankee Stadium where I saw Mickey Mantle play.
Steve: Outside of NYC, what is Len Bermans favorite city and why?
Len: Boston. I had 5 great years there as a sportscaster. My two sons were born in Boston.
Steve: Have you had an opportunity to watch Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable on ESPN 2? Your thoughts on the show?
Len: Haven’t seen it.
Steve: What is the best movie you have seen in the last year?
Len: I liked My Week with Marilyn. Although I found Rooney Mara captivating in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Steve: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Len: The Graduate
Steve: To piggyback off the previous question – what is your favorite sports movie of all time?
Len: The Natural
Steve: Here is the bonus question! Will Len Berman consider making more appearances on CineSportsTalk.com? (No pressure – ha!)
Len: Only if the questions aren’t so hard!
So there you have it! Len Berman’s first (hopefully of many) interviews with CineSportsTalk! Hope you all enjoyed the Q & A and next time we are hoping to have Len on our new radio show!
