The Martian

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover. Steve’s Take

What an amazing film! Matt Damon is amazing and it isn’t just “holy shit I am stuck on Mars, let me sob”, it is some comedy mixed in with the expected hopelessness. Absolutely a must see this week.

Hotel Transylvania 2

The hit CG-animated family comedy Hotel Transylvania gets a follow-up with this Sony Pictures Animation production.

Scott’s Take

Hotel Transylvania wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. This is a series that is targeted for the younglings, so I will let Steve take the wheel on this one.

Steve’s Take

My son saw this in theaters – thankfully with my wife and sister-in-law. Not one that I would want to sit down and watch, but it is something that will keep the kids from running all over the house and painting on the walls.

Sinister 2

The sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror movie. In the aftermath of the shocking events in “Sinister,” a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death. (C) Focus

Scott’s Take

I loved Sinister and the sequel is one of the films I regret not seeing in a theater last year. It sits at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes but a lot of people I have spoken with say it’s just as good or better than the first film. I’ll definitely be checking this one out this week. Finally.

Steve’s Take

Haven’t seen either one. Can’t help ya here people.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

The Paranormal Activity series grows with this fifth entry from Paramount Pictures. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi\

Scott’s Take

Another year, another Paranormal Activity movie. Hopefully, the films $18 million dollar gross will finally halt the brakes on a franchise that saw the first three films gross $300 million domestically. The funny thing is I saw this with my wife a week ago On Demand it it wasn’t terrible, which is the best thing I can say about this series.

Steve’s Take

This series hasn’t been the same since the original. The Marked Ones was one that I was forced to sit through at the screening by myself. That one was mostly comical. Check it out if you have some spare time and don’t expect much.

Irrational Man

When a burned-out, brilliant professor – one who believes in lessons from life rather than textbooks – takes a job at a small college, everyone there is abuzz. He becomes involved with a teacher as well as a precocious student, but it takes a dramatic, existential act to turn his life around and make him see the world through a much rosier and more positive perspective.

Scott’s Take

Here is a Woody Allen film that flew under the radar. Allen is divisive, either you like him or you don’t. I tend to like 75% of his work and although I missed the screening for irrational man, I will be checking this out sometime soon.

Steve’s Take

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Scotty.

Next Week

Obviously, The Martian is the pick of the week this week. After last night’s Golden Globe win for Best Musical or Comedy, people who haven’t seen the film will be interested to see that The Martian is neither a musical or a comedy (although to be fair it does have it’s humorous moments) Nevertheless, The Martian is one of the best films of the year. Next week we have another great film in Straight Outta Compton. Also being released is Everest, The Intern, Woodlawn, and Jem and the Holograms. Have a great week everyone.
