Academy Award (R)-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

Scott’s Take

Oliver Stone’s Snowden is pretty damn good. Is it as good as Citizen Four that previously aired on HBO? I think it is. It goes into more detail on how Edward Snowden got to that fateful hotel room interview. A must see.

American Honey

Star, an adolescent girl from a troubled home, runs away with a traveling sales crew who drive across the American Midwest selling subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, one of whom is Jake, she soon gets into the group’s lifestyle of hard-partying nights, law-bending days, and young love.

Scott’s Take

I grew tired of American Honey about an hour and a half into it. The film looks fantastic and for awhile the film did a masterful job capturing my attention but at a run time of damn near three hours, American Honey just becomes a bloated mess that had me wanting to take a shower with my clothes on.

Steve’s Take

I missed American Honey, but after Scott text me with his reaction while watching it, I am good to go! 3 hours and Shia LaBeou – nope!

Next Week

We only have a couple films going wide this week. My pick is Snowden. Next week we have the awful Blair Witch hitting shelves and a bunch of retreads. Have a Happy New Year everyone.
