I feel, as do lots of online journalists, that the “Pirates” franchise should die. Not that there aren’t positive aspects from the movies, but the stories seem to be drying up. Disney wants the movies to continue being prosperous (financially) and it seems that they will be. “Pirates Of The Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” follows Jack Sparrow as he is being hunted by Captain Salazar due events played out in the past. Brenton Thwaites joins the series as Henry Turner, Will Turner’s son (Orlando Bloom) and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth.

What excited me about this fourth sequel is Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the new Directors on board. From the trailers, to all the promotional content, it seemed that they were changing things up with the franchise, and bringing in fresh blood. Also, the visual style looked a lot better than the previous films in the previews. It’s the best Pirates movie since the first one. I liked how dark and gloomy the story went to at some points. Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg had a terrific vision and story angle that I liked. It didn’t always come across on screen, but the two were definitely the right choice for the job.

As is true with the other Pirates movies as well, the score is terrific and booming in this film. It added a lot of tension to the action scenes. Composer Geoff Zanelli has magnificent taste in how to craft a musical score. His style really fits the franchise. When the main “Pirates” theme hit the screen, it was glorious. So far in my review, I’ve talked only about the positives. Now the negatives. All the comedy bits in this film fall extremely flat. None of the jokes hit, for me at least. I had maybe one chuckle throughout the film’s entire run time. It was disappointing considering that was one of the stronger aspects in the previous entries in the franchise. Depp’s Sparrow has a lot of charm and wit, but not a funny bone.

I also feel very strongly about Ronning and Sandberg’s vision being lost. At times, this movie is truly great, but then it reverts to a goofy comedy meant to please the masses. When the two Directors had say in this film, it worked. The dark aspects and storylines were a nice and refreshing change from the comedy. Unfortunately, Disney only listens to money, and this movie is a guaranteed success. This movie at times really hits home, but most of it is a crowd-pleaser. I liked the dark story elements the film had to offer very much. Depp stands out as Sparrow once again, while also toning down the jokes significantly. It’s not as good as the original, but it’s an improvement over films 2-4.
