The Sportz Nutt LOVES Sports

The NCAA March Madness Championship had its share of ups and downs this year. We had the thrilling upsets in the first round, followed by the chalk favorites winning as the rounds continued. Then, in the Final Four, we had two of the most lopsided games in the history of the sport, where both winners won quite convincingly. Expectations were low going into the Championship game because, well, they were two good teams, but really, people (myself included) expected low scoring and struggles. And then this happened:

What an incredible 15 seconds it was. A hail Mary of a shot to tie the game, then a heck of a shot to win it. Not just win the game, but win the championship. That will go down as one of the biggest shots EVER. Let’s look back in time and see some other championship winning moments that happened as time expired:

Hockey has had its moments, and it’s one of the easiest (yet most passionate) sports in which to do it. Here are some of them:

It won the Cup, but it ranks a bit lower on my scale because it was on the road and was such a weird goal.

A great goal by a (then) unknown. Happened at home, so it adds to the appeal, but the series was never really in doubt.

The only problem with this one was that Hull was in the crease, breaking the (then) rules.

A timeless goal by one of the greatest to ever lace his skates. Seriously, go check out how insane his stats are.

I can’t think of any shots that have won championships with time expiring. Can you?

There have been a few field goals and touchdowns that have won championships late in games with seconds remaining, but, again, I can’t find any with no time remaining. Nitpicking, perhaps, but, for the sake of this article, I won’t include a link.

Touch ’em all Joe, you’ll never hit a bigger homerun in your life!

Sometimes, the original is better than the seuqel.

Not a homerun, but equally as important.

A fitting end to a classic!

As you can see, hitting a championship shot/basket/score is incredibly tough, but even moreso with no time left for the other team to do anything about it. It’s as thrilling and as heartbreaking as ever to see one team win via heroics, while the other stands there in disbelief. Man, do I love sports.

And there you have it
