Hey all, Steve here. I’m back from my very well deserved vacation and I make my return on a weekend in which this column is going to be very easy for me to write! There was a clear winner this weekend and we all saw it coming from light-years away. I have been saying this for a very long time – how stupid were these other studios for putting on their movies on Star Wars weekend? Yes, they were different genres, but it was still very STUPID! Let’s get to it.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This Weekend – $247.9 million (Updated)

Total – $247.9 million

Star Wars

I had to type that number in several times because the website software we use just didn’t believe that number was correct. Well, it was and it is a new record for an opening weekend. It passes Jurassic World in the record books by about $30 million. Congrats goes out to everyone that had anything to do with the making of this film and all of its fans. Just in case you missed it, here is Scott’s review of the film.

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks The Road Chip

This Weekend – $14.4 million

Total – $14.4 million

Alvin and Chipmunks

Here is the perfect example of why you don’t go against Star Wars. Two of the previous Chipmunk movies opened with more than $40 million in their first weekends. Quite the difference when you are going up against a monster like Star Wars.

3. Sisters

This Weekend – $13.4 million

Total – $13.4 million

Another one that deserved a better opening. In case you missed it, here is Scott review of this one.

4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

This Weekend – $5.7 million

Total – $254.4 million

It has taken this one 5 weeks to make what Star Wars almost made in one weekend. That is all.

5. Creed

This Weekend – $5.1 million

Total – $87.9 million

Likely the last week for this bad boy (or Mockingjay).

That’s all for this weekend everyone! Until next week, my friends! Merry Christmas!!
