by Kyle Arango

The Academy Awards are coming to us on Sunday and it has been a very interesting journey to get here. Want to know an honest opinion on what will win and what should win? Check out what we got below and win your Oscar pools.

Best Picture

1917

Marriage Story

The Irishman

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood

Jojo Rabbit

Little Women

Parasite

Joker

Ford v. Ferrari

Should Win: Jojo Rabbit

Will Win: Jojo Rabbit

I know 1917 is the front runner with Parasite a close second. I just believe that this is a weird year where something is going to surprise and recently, there has been a giant surge for Jojo Rabbit which is why I believe the Academy will shock the world and name this best picture.

Best Director

Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood)

Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)

Sam Mendes (1917)

Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)

Todd Phillips (Joker)

Should Win: Bong Joon Ho

Will Win: Sam Mendes

Mendes and Joon Ho are both deserving but the accomplishment of what Mendes pulled off in 1917 will push him over the edge and get him the win.

Best Actor

Adam Driver (Marriage Story)

Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)

Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood)

Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)

Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)

Should Win: Adam Driver

Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix

This is Phoenix’s Oscar to lose and he will not squander that. I just believe I saw more from Driver who plays five versions of the same character. Driver still has a whole career ahead of him, Phoenix gets the win this year.

Best Actress

Renee Zellweger (Judy)

Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)

Charlize Theron (Bombshell)

Saoirse Ronan (Little Women)

Cynthia Erivo (Harriet)

Should Win: Renee Zellweger

Will Win: Renee Zellweger

This win is pretty much locked in and it is very much deserved for Zellweger. Renee crushed it as Judy and seems to be unstoppable.

*** Local Caption *** Marriage Story, Noah Baumbach, USA 2019, V’19, Features

Best Supporting Actress

Laura Dern (Marriage Story)

Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit)

Florence Pugh (Little Women)

Margot Robbie (Bombshell)

Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell)

Should Win: Scarlett Johansson

Will Win: Laura Dern

It feels like Laura already has this award won but do not be surprised if Scarlett sneaks up and wins this. As I said, there is a big Jojo Rabbit push and Scarlett gives her best performance ever in this film. I’m hoping she pulls it off.

Best Supporting Actor

Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood)

Al Pacino (The Irishman)

Joe Pesci (The Irishman)

Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood)

Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes)

Should Win: Brad Pitt

Will Win: Brad Pitt

Brad is perfect in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and as I stated in another article, an underrated actor in the public eye. He deserves to solidify his status and win this award.

Best Adapted Screenplay

The Irishman

Little Women

Jojo Rabbit

The Two Popes

Joker

Should Win: Jojo Rabbit

Will Win: Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit was far and away one of the best written films of the year that balanced comedy and drama impeccably well, it deserves this win.

Best Original Screenplay

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Parasite

1917

Marriage Story

Knives Out

Should Win: Knives Out

Will Win: Parasite

Besides 1917, I would be happy with any of these films winning but the love for Parasite will translate to this win.

Best Original Score

Joker

1917

Marriage Story

Little Women

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Should Win: Joker

Will Win: Joker

No score this year quite told the story like the one for Joker where the music being played was almost like what was going on in his mind. An easy pick here.

Best Cinematography

1917

Parasite

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

The Lighthouse

Joker

Should Win: 1917

Will Win: 1917

This has been a one-horse race from the start, and nothing will stop Roger Deakins from getting his second win for his achievement in 1917.

Best Costume Design

Little Women

Jojo Rabbit

Joker

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

The Irishman

Should Win: Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Will Win: Little Women

The Academy usually goes for the period piece films but the outfits in Tarantino’s new film are already iconic, especially Brad Pitt’s look.

Best Film Editing

Joker

The Irishman

Ford v. Ferrari

Parasite

Jojo Rabbit

Should Win: Ford v. Ferrari

Will Win: Parasite

This is a great year for this category and realistically any of these films could win, but the editing in Parasite only elevates the story even more so it will most likely win.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Joker

Bombshell

Judy

1917

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Should Win: Bombshell

Will Win: Bombshell

Another easy one to pick. The characters in Bombshell all looked exactly like the people they were playing in real life, especially Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly.

Best Animated Feature Film

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

I Lost My Body

Klaus

Toy Story 4

Missing Link

Should Win: Toy Story 4

Will Win: Klaus

Klaus has swept the major awards in other ceremonies and there seems to be an anti-Disney movement happening within the Academy so look out for a Netflix win here.

Best Animated Short

Dcera (Daughter)

Hair Love

Kitbull

Memorable

Sister

Should Win: Kitbull

Will Win: Hair Love

One of the categories that doesn’t have a clear front runner, but Hair Love will win because it is the most accessible and the only one that played in theaters.

Best Live Action Short

A Sister

Brotherhood

Nefta Football Club

The Neighbors’ Window

Saria

Should Win: Nefta Football Club

Will Win: The Neighbors’ Window

The nominees for this category are usually very dower which is why a film like Nefta that is funny should win. However, The Neighbors’ Window is most like a full feature which is the way the Academy tends to lean.

Best International Feature Film

Parasite

Pain and Glory

Honeyland

Corpus Christi

Les Misérables

Should Win: Parasite

Will Win: Parasite

Not even close on this one. Parasite already has its name on this award.

AMERICAN FACTORY

Best Documentary Feature

American Factory

The Cave

The Edge of Democracy

For Sama

Honeyland

Should Win: Honeyland

Will Win: American Factory

A win for American Factory is a win for the Obama family who produced this one. Honeyland is beautiful and is up for another category, but it doesn’t have the push to win.

Best Documentary Short Subject

In the Absence

Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)

Life Overtakes Me

St. Louis Superman

Walk Run Cha-Cha

Should Win: St. Louis Superman

Will Win: Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)

I really want St. Louis Superman to win. It is about a politician who gets things done but also participates in rap battles. However, the political message ones always win and young girls skating in a place they are mistreated is prime Academy material.

Best Song

“I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman

“Into the Unknown” from Frozen II

“Stand Up” from Harriet

“I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough

“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4

Should Win: Rocketman

Will Win: Rocketman

Really light year for this category, no song really sticks with you, but I guess Elton John will win it.

Best Production Design

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Jojo Rabbit

Parasite

The Irishman

1917

Should Win: Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Will Win: Parasite

I didn’t even think Parasite would get nominated but then that video of how the settings were designed came out and now it seems like a forgone conclusion it will win.

Best Sound Editing

1917

Ford v. Ferrari

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Joker

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Should Win: Ford v. Ferrari

Will Win: 1917

1917 has all the love behind it but the sounds in Ford v. Ferrari just made the film even better.

Best Sound Mixing

1917

Ford v. Ferrari

Joker

Ad Astra

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Should Win: Ford v. Ferrari

Will Win: 1917

Same as before, the actual putting the sounds into the film was phenomenal in Ford v. Ferrari but 1917 is just the awards darling right now.

Best Visual Effects

The Lion King

Avengers: Endgame

1917

The Irishman

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Should Win: Avengers: Endgame

Will Win: 1917

They are just going to give all the technical awards to 1917 even though there are other films way more deserving in some categories.
