Hump Day Thoughts on Sports – 10/10/12

by Steve Farace

I found out today while speaking to Scott that there are now pumpkin pop tarts. I’m not sure what is going on in this country, but there is a pumpkin craze taking over. I mean we already have the pumpkin spice coffee at Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, but now we have Hershey’s Kisses and pop tarts flavored with pumpkin? It’s all out of control! I’m not big into the whole pumpkin takeover…ah well.

So I was standing in line at my local Publix Supermarket and I just happened to see a DVD movie for sale. It was Titanic. If you recall, the 3D version just came out a few weeks ago and it was $19.99 at Best Buy. This was the DVD copy of it and it was the SAME PRICE! Who prices these things at Publix? I always see outrageous DVD prices there at the checkout lines, but this was ridiculous! C’mon man!

I’ve been watching the new NBC Sports Network all night. That’s right – don’t judge me. Actually it isn’t that bad. First I watched Rocky and now they are showing an overview of last week in the NFL. Not bad at all. Norv Turner is currently telling his Chargers offense that the 89 yard drive was a “helluva job”. Anywho…

So…how did you all do in your fantasy football leagues this past weekend? I just happened to win all 3 of my games and 2 of them I won by 1 point! Doesn’t get much more exciting than that! Well, it was more nerve testing than anything else. Demaryius Thomas was absolutely money for me. I love the fact that Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning, but we will get to that soon. This coming week I will be facing Scott in one of my leagues – I will let you know how badly I beat him by in next weeks Hump Day article. Let’s hop to it!

What a night if you’re a football fan and a Democrat, eh? The Democratic National Convention and the Giants/Cowboys opening up the season. What is one to do?? Well, it’s about 10pm so, by now you know what you chose. Unless of course you will be switching over to see Bill Clinton’s speech. Well, no room for politics here…let’s get to it!

I want to piggy-back on my opening for last week for a moment. If you are reading this and have any intention of watching Dexter, please let me first warn you about a spoiler alert coming up. If you have yet to watch Dexter and you plan to, then please skip ahead to the start of the article. My main point here is that if you are not completely caught up with a television show that you are watching, DO NOT like it on Facebook! Here I am watching Dexter from season 1 a couple of years ago and I’m mid-way through season 4 when the preview for season 5 pops up on the Dexter Facebook page – how will Dexter cope with Rita’s death? WHAT?!?!?!?!?! Rita DIED?? How??? WHY?!?!? After my confusion as to why the Dexter Facebook page would do something like that without having the common courtesy to give a “spoiler alert” to start the status update, I bawled my eyes out. Ok, maybe not, but still! I’m still made about that! On to sports, damn it…

If you’re like me, you have friends telling you that you should be watching this show and that show everyday. I’ve heard it all from Breaking Bad to Game of Thrones to The Walking Dead. It really puts the pressure on you if you haven’t watched a show from the very beginning. Then again, how do you know a show is going to be good from the very beginning? The best two shows that I have watched over the last decade I have had to play catch up on. Those shows are 24 and Dexter. Now, before you jump all over me I am almost done with season 3 of Breaking Bad and I have not started watching Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead or Mad Men. I will get there though…maybe.

Let me first apologize for not having a Hump Day article last week! I was nearing my death-bed with a bout of Strep Throat…but you can all rest easy now – I’m doing much better!

Have you ever watched Locked Up Abroad on National Geographic? If you haven’t, you are missing something special. This could be one of the more addicting shows on television right now. Basically, it is about people from countries like the United States and England getting into major trouble and doing time in countries like Venezuela and Egypt. It is crazy what happens to people in jail in those countries. There many holy “bleep” moments during the show – check it out! It’s on Monday nights…throw it on your DVR so you can skip the commercials! On to some Hump Day Thoughts on Sports!

There is no other trade deadline like the MLB trade deadline. There are so many rumors and what ifs and buyers and sellers. This year there are more teams that feel that they are in the hunt because of the second wild card spot. My Mom still does not understand the concept of one wild card team and now that there is a second wild card I have given up on explaining it to her. There were winners and losers of this years trade deadline, so let’s get to that and all of the other happenings in sports this past week, eh?
