Championship Disaster

Hey all – Steve here.

Just 4 days removed from winning the NBA Championship, the Toronto Raptors and their fans celebrated in Downtown Toronto and City Hall. The celebration turned until a disaster, however, as there were 4 people shot and 3 arrested in what should have been an all-around amazing day.

“We do have people arrested with firearms, and that’s the start of the investigation,” Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said. The investigation is on-going so it is not yet known if this was a targeted shooting or not.

“I want to make sure everyone stays calm,” said the host, sportscaster Matt Devlin. “This is serious. Everyone stay calm. … There is an emergency being dealt with.”

Tory, the mayor, thanked police for their quick response.

“It is disappointing and I’m sure a source of anger for more than just me that anyone would carry a gun and discharge it at what was otherwise a joyous celebration,” Tory said in a statement. “I hope those found responsible will be held to account to the full extent that the law permits. I want to commend and thank the millions of other people who happily and peacefully celebrated our beloved¬†Toronto Raptors.”

I’m sure we will hear more about this soon, but it is (still) insane to me that during a time of joy there would be someone who would want to inflict this much pain and potentially end lives by shooting a gun into a crowd of people.

If we can’t do better in Canada, where can we?
