Hey all – Steve here.
Just 4 days removed from winning the NBA Championship, the Toronto Raptors and their fans celebrated in Downtown Toronto and City Hall. The celebration turned until a disaster, however, as there were 4 people shot and 3 arrested in what should have been an all-around amazing day.
“We do have people arrested with firearms, and that’s the start of the investigation,” Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said. The investigation is on-going so it is not yet known if this was a targeted shooting or not.
“I want to make sure everyone stays calm,” said the host, sportscaster Matt Devlin. “This is serious. Everyone stay calm. … There is an emergency being dealt with.”
Tory, the mayor, thanked police for their quick response.
“It is disappointing and I’m sure a source of anger for more than just me that anyone would carry a gun and discharge it at what was otherwise a joyous celebration,” Tory said in a statement. “I hope those found responsible will be held to account to the full extent that the law permits. I want to commend and thank the millions of other people who happily and peacefully celebrated our beloved Toronto Raptors.”
I’m sure we will hear more about this soon, but it is (still) insane to me that during a time of joy there would be someone who would want to inflict this much pain and potentially end lives by shooting a gun into a crowd of people.
If we can’t do better in Canada, where can we?
