CST Top 10: Top 10 Monster Movies

Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This time around, with Universal recently returning with another monster movie in The Invisible Man, we decided to countdown the Top 10 best Monster Movies. There was some debate as to what counted as a monster, and we left human beings off this list. Here’s what we came up with.

10. Godzilla (2014)

At number ten is a film that may come as a big surprise in the 2014 version of Godzilla. That’s right monster junkies, this is a good movie. The giant lizard needed to be shown on this list and this film is the perfect representation for him. What I love about this film is the scope of it all. We feel tiny and like we are apart of this disaster on the ground as he walks by us with a giant foot and massive roar. The complaints of “there wasn’t enough Godzilla” are so ridiculous and the point was proven when we got the sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters and it was trash. This film has only gotten better with time and will continue to do so.

9. The Evil Dead

At number nine we have another form of monster in the demons from The Evil Dead. A well-respected franchise that is scary yet thrilling. The monsters are the stuff out of nightmares with these pale white faces and clear eyes that just make you uncomfortable. The franchise continued and went in a more action and comedy route, but it is due to this film that it worked and will likely continue down the road.

8. Gremlins

Not all monsters have to be scary looking and that is certainly not the case with our next choice in Gremlins. These cute little creatures came into our homes in 1984 and became our favorite pets. That is until you broke the rules and turned them into mischievous monsters. There is a reason everyone knows this franchise and it is due to the adorableness of the monsters and what they do. How can you not love a Gremlin? Well, before they transform.

7. An American Werewolf in London

The tale of the werewolf is of such that it has become an iconic monster, and one represented here on this list with An American Werewolf in London. The story of the wolf is a tragic one in which if it attacks you, you become the wolf on a full moon and attack others. In this film, we see that come to fruition with it happening and those around the wolf are unwilling to acknowledge the existence of it. This type of story has been tried many times and will likely be tried again but, this is the best version that has lived on for some time now.

6. IT

In at number six is a monster that might be the most terrifying of all in Pennywise the clown from IT. This clown has the ability to change into whatever your biggest fear is and use it to scare you so much that you become tastier when he eats you. Oh, and he also goes mostly for children. What a menacing creature and one that takes a group of brave children standing up in order to take it down. Yes, this is a monster and one that has to be Stephen King’s greatest creation.

5. Jurassic Park

Starting off the top five is an animal that we consider to be a monster in the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. This movie is a thrill and inspiring, but we all come to it to see dinosaurs on the big screen. Some of them are gentle creatures just roaming the area, and others are genuine monsters that are there to eat you. There’s a reason why the T-Rex was the dominant species because it destroyed everything in its path. If dinosaurs existed today, we would all be out of luck and this movie is more of a warning that if there ever was a way to bring these creatures back to life, don’t do it, I care about you.

4. The Thing

In at number four is another monster that would be devastating if it existed in the creature from The Thing. This monster is absolutely crazy. It eats you slowly and painfully and then once it’s done, transforms into you as a disguise to eat the next person. This film shows how people would react if this thing existed and the results are not pleasing. Imagine being with your mother and then she takes a bite out of your face. We don’t need that running around and thank God it doesn’t exist.

3. Jaws

What does exist and could absolutely be real is the giant shark from Jaws. A film about a massive shark that stalks a small town and only has one goal, to eat. At the time, this film was terrifying and even today people are still so scared of this film they will not go in the water. It is not unbelievable to see a large shark that wants to eat you. Genetics exists for a reason. Once you hear that shark music, you better take off and all these shark experts telling me they don’t want to hurt me are crazy. Why don’t you go pet the shark and tell me how that goes?

2. Frankenstein (1931)

Just missing out on number one is probably the first thing you thought of when you saw the topic. That choice being Frankenstein’s monster. People still do not understand that to this day and call the monster Frankenstein when Frankenstein is the name of the doctor. It is a tragic story of a beast that is brought to life and immediately mistreated due to its look. He is hurt so much so that he attacks and causes suffering for all those that wronged him. It is a message to treat everyone the same, regardless of appearance, you may never know how much you could hurt someone. Boris Karloff is incredible as the monster and went on to be the one true interpretation of the character.

1. Alien

Finally, at the number one position, we have the xenomorph from the film Alien. This is the definition of a monster when you look it up. A scary looking, life-threatening, ruthless being that will stop at nothing to kill everything in sight. That’s all it knows, and it does this to Ripley and her crew. This monster and film revolutionized what could be done in film and this style of horror that is still replicated to this day. Some people prefer the sequel, but this is one of the best horror films ever and has established a legacy.

Well, there you have it! The Top 10 Monster Movies ever made. This topic was at one point considered for the first topic we ever did with this piece and years later it made its way up. What does your list look like? Let us know below and we will see you next time with another list.
