Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week with Adrift being released, we decided to countdown the Top 10 Survival Films. This is a difficult list to come up with as the definition of survival can be very loose and apply to many different movies whether they be horror, animated, drama, or others. Many of us had completely different lists but we had enough in common to make a consensus so without further ado, here we go!
10. Finding Nemo
Starting off the list we have one of the greatest animated films of all time in Finding Nemo. Now before you say anything, this is a tale of survival. We see both a father and son have to find ways to survive impossible circumstances. Marlin must trek the ocean and make it past sharks, whales, jellyfish, and many more creatures in order to find his son. Meanwhile must find a way to escape the tank before Darla can kill him. This is one of the best father/son stories you will ever see told.
Tied in the eighth position we have the original Predator. Predator is a classic movie monster that many people know through countless films. The original Predator is the only good film of the bunch and is a great tale of survival. These men led by Arnold Schwarzenegger have to everything they can to not die at the hands of this creature who is the ultimate hunter. It is so fascinating to watch a human be hunted and Predator is one of the best movies that portrays that.
T-8. The Descent
Also tied for the eighth position we have The Descent. Here we have another movie about strange creatures hunting humans. These explorers get trapped in a cave and must avoid being captured y these creatures who want to eat them. These things are very creepy and once you see them, you are instantly terrified. This film and countless others should prove to all of us that we should never go exploring caves! There are always creatures in there that want to kill you. It’s like if a fly came into your house, you instantly want that thing dead. Caves are no different.
At number seven we have our second Pixar film to make the list in Wall-E. This is a very interesting tale of survival because you can make an argument that all the characters are trying to survive different things. Wall-E wants to survive his loneliness and when Eve shows up, he will do anything to save her and be with her. Meanwhile, the humans are trying to survive on the spaceship and hoping that one day they can return to Earth. It is a cautious tale of what our future could potentially look like and a beautiful film at the same time.
6. A Quiet Place
At number six we have a movie you can still watch in theaters right now in A Quiet Place. This should give you an idea as to how big of an impression this film has left on us. There will be no spoilers here, but A Quiet Place makes this list because of its unique take on survival. What if we were invaded by creatures who couldn’t see us but could hear us? How would we live? The movie is scary and gripping the entire time and does not let you go until the very end. It will be talked about for generations.
5. Apollo 13
At number five we have a tale of survival in space in Apollo 13. This is easily one of Ron Howard’s best films supported by an outstanding cast. When a film is put in space you immediately know the risks of their situation. There is so much that can go wrong and here is where you see those things happen. It makes you never want to go to space and you root for these astronauts to find their way home. The claustrophobia of the situation makes you feel for the characters and the story told is amazing.
4. The Martian
Coming in at number four we have another survival film set in space in The Martian. Now this film could’ve been so boring, but it was essentially Castaway in space. Here we see Matt Damon get accidentally left on Mars and have to watch him try to survive until NASA can go back to get him. Matt Damon is fantastic here as he has a tough task in entertaining us by himself for most of the movie. He makes is engaging and fun. We are cheering for this character and that kind of ability is hard to come by. If you have not seen The Martian yet, go do yourself a favor and seek it out.
3. Cast Away
At the number three spot we have what might be Tom Hank’s best performance in Castaway. This movie is an all-time classic that transcends movies. People know and reference Castaway all the time and constantly refer to that famous Volleyball, Wilson. Tom Hanks is magnetic here as a stranded man on an island who must learn to survive on his own. It is a tragic story that takes on the realities of the situation and makes you feel for its character. A lesson should be learned that if Tom Hanks is ever on a plane with you, get off immediately.
2. 127 Hours
Just missing out on the top spot is the only film to make all our lists in 127 Hours. This is the story of a hiker who gets trapped in a crevice where his arm is stuck against a boulder. James Franco gives his best performance to date which is a difficult thing to say now. However, there is no denying just how captivating this story is. To see a man do everything he can to survive and eventually make the ultimate decision to SPOILER…… cut his arm off, it is haunting.
Coming in at number one on our list is a film that seems to make many lists in Aliens. James Cameron ends up on these lists a lot and I’m tired of talking about it, but here we go again with Aliens. Here we see the incredible Ripley have to battle the aliens again but this time, the genre is different. Aliens was such a dramatic step in the right direction for the alien franchise. What we have now is an all-time great horror film in Alien and an all-time great action film in Aliens. We root for this group to survive the creature’s attacks and the film still holds up visually and story wise. Even though I’m tired of talking about it, its still a classic film.
So, there you have it! The Top 10 Best Survival films. This is such a broad genre and you will see on our lists just how many different options we had to choose from. It was incredibly difficult to narrow it down to ten and this is what we came up with. What does your list look like? Are we missing anything? How would you define the word “survival”? Go and head to the comments and let us know! We will see you next week when the Top 10 list returns!
