Hump Day Thoughts On Sports – 6/7/17

Hey all, Steve here.

Well, it has been a long time since I did one of these things. I might have to shake some of the rust off. It’s just like riding a bike, right? I get here, I entertain, I leave. That’s what Steve does. The last time I did one of these things was 8/24/16. That was the day that was labeled as Kobe Bryant day last year. How annoying was that? No, not my article, but the idea of Kobe Bryant day. Alright, let’s fast forward to today and talk about some current events. It has been raining in Florida for 4 straight months. People have begun kayaking to work and school and there are fish swimming in backyards. Also, one of our largest attractions – The Sawgrass Mills Mall – is closed for business as every lake in and around it has flooded over. You would think property values would skyrocket as now pretty much everyone has ocean-front property. I can’t wait to begin sharing the roads with our alligator friends.

I mean really, what did we all do to deserve this? Is it because of those damn Marlins and their 1,500 people in attendance games? I’m kidding – that happens every year and these floods don’t. We just need it to stop so that we can grab all the fish and have a giant fish-fry and be happy again. Alright, enough of this BS, let’s get on to some of the sports crap that has gone down lately.

NBA Finals

NBA: Finals-Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors

Yes, the Finals are going on and yes it features the same two teams again and yes, it has started out the same as it did last year with the Warriors up 2-0 over the Cavs. Now the question is, will the series end like it did last year with the Cavs taking home the title. While the answer is probably no, you can’t count any team with a player named LeBron James out. First of all, let’s stop with all this nonsense that LeBron is tired. The man is a beast and he might not even be human. Did you see his PERFECT response today when asked if he was tired? He said he was averaging a triple-double in the Finals. LeBron is doing his thing, but his role-players are not. Guys like J.R. Smith have not shown up and Tristan Thompson has 8 points and 8 rebounds in 2 games! Get it together! This is the NBA Finals – it’s not time to tuck your tail between your legs and shy away from the spotlight. I think the Cavs win tonight in Game 3, but they must also win Game 4 to have a chance in this series. With Kevin Durant on the Warriors this season, there will be no comeback from going down 3-1 for the Cavs.

Albert Pujols

The Machine hit career homerun number 600 over the weekend and just to put the icing on the cake, it was a grand slam. Pujols has been doing this for a long time and at 37 years old he became the 9th player ever to hit his 600th. He has done it in a variety of ways – he was a very good 1st baseman for the Cardinals and he has played through injuries with the Angels and just went you thought he was slowing down a few years back, he hit 40 homeruns. Oh and we also found out that the fan that caught the long-ball gave the ball back for nothing. Smart move? Probably not. Actually it was probably pretty stupid as he would have made a pretty penny off of it. Still, kudos to the kid for doing what he felt was the right thing to do. Congrats goes out to Albert. At 37, it will be interesting to see how many more he can get.

NHL Finals

Does anyone really care about hockey anymore? Not enough for us to cover it. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Colin Kaepernick

I am so sick and tired of hearing that this guy is not signed yet. Who the hell cares? There are plenty of guys that go unsigned or that sign right before training camp. This guy is nothing special and by no means is he a must sign anywhere in the league. To me, it does not matter why he hasn’t signed anywhere. His phone hasn’t rang with an offer. He worked out for the Seahawks. Why? I’m sure they are pretty satisfied with their current QB. Look, for me he was going to have an issue finding a starting role in the league anyway. Add to it all of the nonsense that went on last year with him taking a knee for the National Anthem. As a player, why would you do anything to make it harder on yourself to find a job? Is there really a PR department out there that would take a chance on bringing him in after he was seen as being unpatriotic for doing what he was doing? That answer for the moment is no. I don’t care for the 49ers and I don’t care for Kaepernick so this story just doesn’t interest me all that much. It needs to just go away. Perhaps he can sign a long term deal with the Edmonton Eskimos. Oh, maybe sitting on the bench would be too cold in Canada.

That’s A Wrap

That’s all I’ve got for this week. It was a nice little week for my first time back in the saddle. I have never said “back in the saddle” before in my life. This time I typed it so my streak is still going strong. Next week we might be talking about a new NBA Champion. We won’t have another player hitting their 600th homerun and if we are all lucky, the Stanley Cup Finals will be all over and done with. What the hell are the ratings on that thing anyway? Is there anyone outside of Nashville and Pittsburgh watching that thing? I’ll get on the horn with NBC and get back to you next week. Until then, stay classy.
