FILM REVIEW: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

BY KYLE ARANGO

Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johannsson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Dave Bautista, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olson, and basically every other Marvel character you can think of. It tells the story of the arrival of Thanos and his quest to collect all six infinity stones which will allow him to destroy half the universe with the snap of his fingers. We have had ten years and 18 films worth of buildup to get here and the time has finally arrived. Could Avengers: Infinity War be worth the wait and be the film we have all waited for? 100% yes. Avengers: Infinity War is a stunning achievement that will leave you satisfied. All the buildup and all the hype have been leading to this and the payoff is beautiful.

Let first start off by saying that this is going to be a difficult film to review for two reasons. For one, there are many things here that could be considered a spoiler. All the heroes and all the moments are difficult to talk about without giving away a major detail. The other reason being that I am still speechless and in awe of what I have just witnessed. If you have invested yourself into this franchise and care about these characters, then you will be emotionally drained by the end of the film. That is something to applaud. Marvel has now put out 19 pictures full of different stories and characters with one through line to keep it all together, Thanos. The fact that the buildup paid off this well is astounding and an achievement that will be rare to come by again.

Now let’s get to the giant purple elephant in the room, Thanos. Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, is everything you had hoped he would be. He strikes terror into the hearts of the heroes and the audience. My heart was constantly pounding because I was so nervous for these characters that I love. NOBODY is safe when Thanos shows up and you genuinely feel like there is no way to stop him. His lackies called The Black Order look visually impressive but, in the end, are not much more. You quickly realize that Thanos is the only one we should be scared of, and he also looks visually amazing. I know I just wrote a whole paragraph about Thanos, but its because he is one of the greatest villains you will ever see on screen. Avengers: Infinity War is his film and you understand his motivations, even though he will do whatever it takes to achieve his goal. Be scared.

Now I want to discuss what we all came to see and that is what its like to see all of our favorite characters come together. Joe and Anthony Russo had the task of trying to balance all of these different franchises and personalities together, and they pulled it off. We have seen The Avengers together, but now mix in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spiderman, and Black Panther. What you get is a well-balanced, action-packed, and emotional journey involving all our heroes together. The standouts of the film to me are Thor, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Vision, Scarlett Witch, Starlord, Dr. Strange, and Gamora. The rest of the heroes are terrific as well, but these guys really stole the show for me. I mean its amazing to see Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt clash. Zoe Saldana however really gives the emotional punch that the film needs. She being the adopted daughter of Thanos, so you can guess she has a big role to play. Now this brings me to the rest of the characters. Every Avenger gets their standout moment, but some feel more powerful than others. With there being so much going on, it is hard to give everyone a great moment, and the Russo’s did it the best it could be done.

One final aspect I want to touch on quickly is the people behind the scenes of Avengers: Infinity War. Alan Silvestri returns to score the film here and you can feel the immediate difference he brings. His theme for The Avengers will become iconic now and his stylings are the best he has ever done. Now I want to address The Russo’s. There guys accomplished what should have been the impossible and made the best Avengers movie to date and one that will be remembered for generations to come. What Joss Wheedon did was great, but Anthony and Joe Russo took it to another level. You can tell that they appreciate and love the comics this film is based on, and their love is poured onto the screen. I am both excited and scared to see what they bring next to Avengers Untitled because I do not know how they are going to top this. That is one of the great things about this is I really have no idea where the story is going to go from here. We are left on a cliffhanger that also feels like an ending and I could not be more curious to find out what is next.

Well at the end of it all, Avengers: Infinity War is the film all comic book fans and film fans alike have been waiting for. What we once thought would never happened finally has and Marvel will forever be applauded in history for what they have done. This is an action-packed, funny, and emotional journey that will leave you both satisfied by the quality yet wanting more. You can’t get enough. Two and a half hours flies by and you will want to buy another ticket immediately. I obviously recommend Avengers: Infinity War and will be happy for all the success this film receives. I’ve never been so happy to be emotionally empty.

FINAL WORD:
