Welcome back to the weekly Top 10 list. Each week we come up with a topic, go create our separate lists, and then come together to create a top 10 consensus. This week we decided to not talk about The House with a Clock in its Walls, because why? Instead we look back at the summer of 2018 and the adventures it held for us movie lovers. This was a great summer for movies surprisingly, so this was a tough list to make so without further introduction, here we go!

10. Upgrade

We start off our summer with a little sci-fi film that you may not have known was even released in theaters called Upgrade. This was a film I went into seeing based on the late John Schnepp’s recommendation without seeing a single trailer, and holy crap was it a well enjoyed surprise. Logan Marshall-Green gave one of the best performances of the year in this film. The action is phenomenal and unique, leaving a wide tooth grin on your face. It’s clear this film will become a cult classic.

9. Deadpool 2

Now to a film that did not sneak by anybody, Deadpool 2. We all know who Deadpool is by now thanks to Ryan Reynold’s passion project and now we got the sequel. There was controversy during production when Tim Miller left as director and was replaced by David Leitch, however the harm was not great. The film survived and became a rather raunchy enjoyable film. Many of us were slightly underwhelmed at CST but that is not to say it was bad. Hopefully Deadpool 3 can wrap up this trilogy nicely.

8. Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

From a big budget blockbuster, to the complete opposite we have Won’t You Be My Neighbor? As if the name is not a dead giveaway, this is a documentary about the life of Fred Rogers who created Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. This documentary broke many people and made us feel like a kid again with how much heart the story behind the beloved show had. Along with Three Identical Strangers, documentaries made a major come back to this summer and I encourage all to seek these out for a nice cry leaving you with a smile.

7. Ant-Man and the Wasp

We go from a small documentary to a couple of small superheroes in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The third Marvel film to be released in 2018 had the task of following two of the biggest films of the year and it certainly succeeded. Ant-Man and the Wasp was a terrific pallet cleanser from the drama Avengers: Infinity War had and gave us some of the best laughs mixed with action of the year. What makes Ant-Man and Wasp such likeable characters are their relatability to the everyday person. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, and Michael Douglas are such a loveable trio and it is hard not to be taken by their infectiousness. It is almost like a romantic comedy in superhero movie.

6. Crazy Rich Asians

Speaking of romantic comedies, number six just happens to be our most recent film in Crazy Rich Asians. Wow this movie just won over so many people. I myself have seen it three times now and have cried more and more with every viewing. You do not have to be Asian to enjoy this film, you can find the same enjoyment as everyone else. What is loved about this film was the passion coming from everyone involved. I got to interview some of the cast for this film and the joy they had when talking about this was infectious. It proved that films with a cast so invested can do the most justice.

5. BlacKkKlansman

Starting off the top five is another film with a diverse cast that came out just recently in BlacKkKlansman. This is Spike Lee’s latest film and is probably one of his best. Not many even knew about this story but many were glad they got to see it. In an ironic statement, we see a black man infiltrate the KKK and make them look so foolish which was great to unfold. What Spike Lee put in at the end of the film was disturbing and a shock to see how he tied this story to today’s political climate. It is a film you should be hearing about come awards time.

4. Incredibles 2

Now to a film that took us back fourteen years and was long awaited in Incredibles 2. Incredibles 2 to me might be the best film of the year so far. I was always a fan of the original The Incredibles but not a huge one. I always considered Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. to be better films. In addition, I haven’t been impressed with any Pixar sequels not named Toy Story. However, Incredibles 2 was nothing to worry about. This movie is dynamic and hilarious and a film that the whole family can enjoy for generations.

3. Hereditary

Now to a film that does not fit the usual summer blockbuster description, Hereditary. This film is no doubt unsettling and will make you uncomfortable but succeeds magnificently. Most of the CST crew was sold on its approach though I’ll admit, I fell in the ladder. It is not for those who do not like horror, but for those who love horror, they will love this film.

2. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Now to a more upbeat and less creepy film, Mission Impossible: Fallout. This is one of the best action films I have ever seen and probably all time. Tom Cruise has sealed the definition of a true action star here by how he puts himself through the most dangerous situations and literally breaks his bones just to give us the full experience. Fallout is the best film of the Mission Impossible franchise that just continues to out due itself and I’m taken back by just incredible they are.

1. Avengers: Infinity War

We have had plenty of terrific films this summer or all shapes and sizes but our number one is the biggest of them all: Avengers: Infinity War. It’s the top spot winner, and can you really disagree with the choice? Avengers: Infinity War took 18 films worth and brought it all together. Not only did we see all our favorites in one shot, but each character had a chance to shine show the true accomplishment in this film. We saw the villain win in this and now where this story will go is a huge question mark. If this film can make $2 billion at the box office, who knows what Avengers 4 can do?

Well there you have it! The Top 10 Summer Movies of 2018. This was a great summer for movies that had a hit nearly every week. Who knows what next year will bring, but if it tops this year then that will really be something. What does your list look like? Let us know in the comments and we will see you next week with another Top 10.
