Los Angeles Angels Preview

Did anyone have a worse offseason then the Los Angeles Angels? After owner Arte Moreno declared that the team would spare no expense in upgrading during free agency, he went out and laid an egg. After lowballing prized free agent outfielder Carl Crawford with a contract offer of 6 years 108 million ,only to see the Boston Red Sox swoop in and sign Crawford to a whopping 7 year 142 million dollar contract. So how did they make up for it? They went out and pulled off the mother of all blockbusters, they traded for Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells. So let’s get this straight, you don’t want to pay a young superstar , but you will assume the remaining 70 million dollars of an oft injured 32 year old underachiever. If I’m an Angel fan, I’m wondering why Arte Moreno enters the offseason with chest a thumping and completely drops the ball. Oh wait, they did sign reliever Scott Downs. On the bright side, they will get budding star Kendry Morales back from his fluke base jumping injury and their pitching is above average with Dan Haren, Jared Weaver,Ervin Santana,Joel Piniero and the human walk machine Scotty Kazmir. The problem with the Angels is the same as it is every year. They always seem to have a pretty anemic offense. Their project line up looks something like this:

  1. 3B Maicer Izturis
  2. DH Bobby Abreu
  3. RF Torii Hunter
  4. 1B Kendry Morales
  5. LF Vernon Wells
  6. 2B Howie Kendrick
  7. SS Erick Aybar
  8. C Jeff Mathis
  9. CF Peter Bourjos
If this were my fantasy baseball team, 7 of the 9 players in the projected line up would be available on the waiver wire. Great job Arte!
