Steve’s Hot New York Sports Takes – 2/26/18

Hey all – Steve here. You know when I first started this article, I said I would make an attempt to include hockey. I am not a quitter or anything, but that just ain’t happening. I just don’t have it in me and you don’t really want me covering hockey for you. That being said, it has been a LONG time since the first time I wrote this and I will do my best to keep this thing going as consistently as possible each and every Monday in an attempt to bring you more sports! Alright, let’s get to it people!

Ah, spring baseball. Well, technically it is still winter, but just relax ok? The key for the Mets this season is health. If they are healthy, they will make a playoff push. It is as simple as that. I don’t care if they go winless for the spring, the key is that everyone comes out of each game healthy. Yes, there are some nagging injuries to Bruce and Dom Smith, but as long as they are just nagging injuries then the Mets are all good. They just can’t let anything major happen to any of their key contributors. Speaking of which, Noah Syndergaard took to the hill today and through his 2 perfect innings he tossed 22 pitches, 11 of which were clocked at 100+ mph. He is a HUGE piece to the staff and he is showing he is healthy early on after the torn pectoral last season. The Mets are now 2-2 on the spring.

The two biggest stories out of Yankee camp in the first few days has been the arrival of Giancarlo Stanton and Russell Wilson. Wilson was drafted by the Rangers and the rights to his contract were traded to the Yankees over the off-season. He won’t be playing baseball any time soon, but he is there at camp having some fun. Stanton was the big off-season pick-up for the Yankees and what a pick-up he is. The reigning National League MVP will slot into the line-up along with Aaron Judge in what could be a historic season in the Bronx when it comes to power. Health has been an issue with Stanton in the past, but he showed what he could do last year with the Marlins when all is good with that massive frame of his. The Yankees are 3-0 to start the spring and they are playing the Phillies as I type this.

As the off-season gets underway for the Giants after an awful season, there are tons of question marks. They have their coach in Pat Shurmur and it seems as though they have a plan to move forward and for now that includes Eli Manning. What are they thinking about for the draft? The latest from Mel Kiper Jr. is that the Giants will take Saquon Barkley at the number 2 pick. At first he had the Giants taking taking Josh Rosen out of UCLA, but he now has him dropping to the Dolphins at #11. I know the big thing is QB, but the Giants have Davis Webb, who many think can be a serviceable or better QB in the league. Think about the potential if they take Barkley. They will have Barkley at RB along with guys like Odell, Shepard and Evan Engram out there catching passes. Now if only they could get their O-line to cooperate.

One of the big questions with the Jets this off-season will be the running back position. Will they still with their tandem of Bilal Powell and Matt Forte or do they go out in free agency and make a splash? Some options out there are Le’Veon Bell, Carlos Hyde, Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead from the Patriots, LeGarrette Blount, Doug Martine, Jamaal Charles, etc. Remember, free agency starts before the draft so just like every team out there, the Jets need to make a decision on whether or not to go out there and sign someone or draft at their position of need.

The Knicks. They are playing the Warriors right now and they are making it a game! They are up 64-63 at the half. The Knicks are going nowhere and they are going their quickly after the injury to Porzingis. The question now is whether or not the Knicks will want to lock the man up in a contract after tearing his ACL. With Dolan as the owner of this team you never quite know what they will do. For me it always seems like the Joker saying “do I look like a man with a plan?”. It’s just the same thing year after year and I just hope to see a new owner during my lifetime.

The Nets are 19-41. That is all.

That’s all for this week. By the way…the Warriors came out of halftime on a 9-0 run and they turned the Knicks 1 point lead right around. That’s how the Warriors do things. Next week we will be one week closer to Opening Day, the draft and the Knicks and Nets seasons coming to an end. Have a great week everyone!
